As part of the project for the further comprehensive upgrade of the regional airports, and having completed the third construction phase, Fraport Greece, the managing and operating body of the 14 regional airports in Greece, will proceed with the fourth phase of the respective works at these airports, according to an official announcement.

According to Fraport Greece, this concerns the fourth phase of runway refurbishment and reconstruction works at the airports of Zakynthos (ZTH), Kefalonia (EFL), Corfu (CFU), Samos (SMI), Rhodes (RHO), Mytilene (MJT), Mykonos (JMK), and Santorini (JTR).

It is noted that during these periods, any urgent flights (medical evacuations, search and rescue, firefighting, humanitarian, governmental, and other national flights) may be conducted by helicopters, while all airport services will remain fully operational.

These works aim to further enhance the already high safety standards of the runways and include, among other interventions, extensive refurbishments of the runway strips and runway end safety areas (RESA).

These projects are part of the Concession Agreement and are carried out with sustainability and local community respect in mind, as supporting sustainable development and social responsibility are fundamental principles for Fraport Greece.

The temporary closure of runways is absolutely necessary due to the scale and complexity of the works. The schedule has been carefully planned to minimize operational disruption.

Compliance with regulations and safety at all levels remain the company’s top priorities. It should be noted that these works form part of a broader strategy to further upgrade the already high safety and operational standards of the regional airports managed by Fraport Greece. Moreover, they are part of large-scale projects financed under the Recovery and Resilience Facility.

In this context, the company advises the traveling public to take into account the planned runway closure periods when planning upcoming trips.
