MEA, a result of a Public & Private Partnership (PPP) project, was designed and built by SIRRA SA. in which the companies INTRAKAT, ARCHIRODON GROUP & ENVITEC participate.
It applies in practice the principle of the circular economy in the region, with an emphasis on recycling and reuse, giving an organized and studied solution to the problem of mixed waste.
It is noted that from the start of operation of the MEA Serres, in October 2019, until the end of 2022:
• 180,028 tons of mixed waste were received and processed
• 25,780 tons of recyclable materials were recovered and disposed of in the general categories of plastics, metals and paper/cardboard, while
• 24,305 tons of secondary products were produced and made available, such as CLO, aggregate and sand.
The project was built at the "Neraida Ruins" site, which belongs to the Municipality of Heraklia Serres, on a total area of approximately 57 acres next to the existing Serres Foundry. SIRRA SA participated in the financing of the project with the amount of the investment amounting to 30 million euros - while it has taken over the operation and management of the unit for a period of 25 years, on behalf of the Regional FODSA of Central Macedonia.
The unit implements a modern, high-tech waste management system, one of the best in Europe, which includes technologies of mechanical sorting and biological treatment, through composting. It was designed and built to receive 63,000 tons of mixed waste annually from the Municipal green bin networks of the Municipalities of the Prefecture of Serres and the Municipality of Kilkis. Of the nominal capacity of 63,000 tons, 3,000 tons per year is pre-sorted organic waste.
