The tram depot expansion project at Elliniko

The Governor of Attica, Nikos Hardalias, visited the site of the tram depot expansion project at Elliniko, where he received a detailed briefing on the progress of the works and the timeline for their completion.

The update was provided by the CEO of Hellenic Metro S.A., Nikolaos Koureta, and the CEO of STASY, Athanasios Kottaras.

The project is funded by the Regional Program “Attica” 2021 - 2027 of the Attica Region, with a total cost of €15,948,800.

In his statements, Mr. Chardalias emphasized that the extension of the tram depot ensures the efficient operation of the tram system, while stressing the need for metropolitan management of traffic issues throughout the Athens Basin.

The tram depot extension project in Elliniko consists of two sub-projects:

  1. Technical Work Contract The first sub-project, managed by Hellenic Metro S.A., includes:

    • The construction of a new metal building/roof, open on all sides, measuring 70 x 43 meters.
    • The creation of a new area of 5 acres adjacent to the existing depot.
    • The provision of parking for 22 new tram vehicles.
    • Upgrading of electromechanical and railway systems of the existing depot.
    • The creation of two new inspection/repair pits within the workshop.
    • Execution of archaeological research and clearance work for unexploded ordnance from WWII.
    • Creation of a Project Registry.

    The related works, amounting to €9,627,051 (63% of the total contract), have already been certified by the beneficiary company, with completion expected in July.

  2. Telecommunications Equipment Procurement The second sub-project, managed by STASY (Urban Transport S.A.), includes:

    • The procurement, installation, and commissioning of 136 radio modems in the frequency range of 450-470 MHz, of which 26 will be installed on tram vehicles, 90 in cabinets along the network (74 in the existing network and 16 in the extension to Piraeus), and 20 as spares.
    • The development of a radio coverage study to ensure optimal operation of the telecommunications network.

    The delivery and commissioning of the above equipment is scheduled for October, although no related expenditure has been certified so far.

Present at the site visit by the Regional Governor in Elliniko were, among others, the CEO of Hellenic Metro S.A., the CEO of STASY, Athanasios Kottaras, the Deputy Director of Finance of Hellenic Metro S.A., Sofia Tsilika, the General Director of Maintenance of STASY, Kyriakos Karagiannidis, the Head of the Tram Operations Control Center, Nikos Theodorakopoulos, and engineers from the contractor company TERNA.

Accompanying the Regional Governor of Attica, Nikos Chardalias, were Special Secretary Elena Rapti, the Deputy Regional Governor of Southern Athens, Christos Theodoropoulos, and the Head of the Special Management Service of the Regional Program (ESDP) "Attica" 2021-2027, Dimitris Drosis.
