Hill International, as the lead partner in a consortium comprising AECOM and SALFO & Associates, has announced its selection by Athens International Airport (AIA) to spearhead the Project Management Office (PMO) for the ongoing Athens Airport Expansion Program.

The ongoing expansion program at the airport, with a budget exceeding €1.17 billion, aims to increase passenger capacity from 26 million to 40 million annually. Approximately 50% of the investment is expected to be completed by 2028, with the remainder slated for completion by 2032. However, if the development of Athens International Airport continues to progress as anticipated, there is a strong likelihood that the investment timeline will be advanced.

This phase encompasses new constructions, renovations, and expansions to the Main Terminal Building, which will include enhanced passenger service areas (such as boarding gates and check-in counters), dining establishments, and retail outlets. It also involves the development of a new aircraft parking apron, complete with associated taxiways, ground support equipment facilities, and a new aircraft bridge over the highway. Additionally, a multi-story parking structure will be built adjacent to the hotel, with a capacity to accommodate over 3,300 vehicles. This facility is projected to be completed by the second quarter of 2027.

The design has been entrusted to the internationally renowned architectural firm Grimshaw Architects, with local collaboration from the Greek firm K-Studio.

Upon the completion of the expansions, the Eleftherios Venizelos terminal will be one of the largest in Europe (as a single terminal) and will have reached the peak of its capacity.

Phase Three with the New Terminal

The third phase of the expansion at Eleftherios Venizelos Airport will result in the creation of a new terminal across from the existing one.

For this expansion phase to proceed, the airport must reach a passenger traffic volume of 36 million and demonstrate that this number will increase to 38 million within two years.

With the new terminal, Athens Airport will be able to accommodate up to 50 million passengers annually.

The timeline for this new infrastructure is estimated to be completed by 2045, and as of now, there is no cost estimate available. The plan includes the development of a second terminal in the area currently designated for long-term parking, as well as the further development of aircraft parking aprons, new taxiways, a new aircraft bridge over the highway, new road access routes, and a new multi-story parking facility.
