These issues demand urgent and innovative solutions to ensure sustainability and improve the quality of life for urban dwellers. Advanced information and digital communication technologies, particularly 5G, play a crucial role in addressing these problems and in creating truly smart and sustainable urban centers.

What is 5G and Its Role in Smart Cities?

5G is the fifth generation of mobile communication networks, offering speeds up to 100 times faster than 4G and significantly reducing data transfer latency. This enables real-time responsiveness across connected devices and supports simultaneous connections from multiple devices without compromising performance. 5G is essential for enabling smart applications like autonomous vehicles, robotic surgery, and smart cities, all of which require a fast, reliable, and flexible network.

Furthermore, a separate study predicts that by 2030, mobile communications, including 5G, IoT, and AI, will contribute nearly $11 trillion to the global economy, or 8.4% of global GDP. A significant portion of this growth will come from increased productivity and efficiency driven by the widespread adoption of mobile services and digital technologies.

The Case of Elliniko: Greece’s First Smart City

A prime example of integrating new technologies and digital communications into urban planning is The Ellinikon, Greece’s first smart city, being developed by Lamda Development. The project incorporates advanced smart city technologies, including:

According to Odysseas Athanasiou, CEO of Lamda Development, the goal is to transform the former Ellinikon airport area into a cutting-edge, smart, and sustainable urban environment. The choice of technologies has been made with strict criteria to ensure they meet the highest sustainability and social impact standards.
