The first project concerns the western junction of Arkalochori, which will serve as the main entry point to the settlement. This junction is expected to be completed within the coming weeks, with only minor works and asphalt paving remaining. The junction will significantly enhance the safety of local residents by providing an additional secure access route to Arkalochori.
The second project addresses the stabilization of soil failures along the Heraklion-Viannos road, with a budget of €6,630,000 funded by the Public Investment Program.
The works involve the reshaping and reinforcement of slopes through the installation of pile walls, wire mesh cages, and other technical solutions to address failures identified at 19 locations—two of which are near Agios Sozontas—and the remainder along the Viannos area. So far, work has been completed at 13 sites, with six remaining.
Separate meetings were held to discuss the ongoing projects, under the directive of the Regional Governor of Crete, Stavros Arnaoutakis, as well as other regional matters. These meetings included the Mayor of Minoa Pediados, Vasilis Kegkeroglou, the Mayor of Viannos, Pavlos Baritakis, Deputy Regional Governor Nikos Skoulas, and relevant officials.
“We have observed the progress of these two critical infrastructure projects, which concern the inland areas of Heraklion. We engaged in discussions with the mayors regarding all the works in their jurisdictions that impact road traffic, enhance safety, and improve the quality of life for both residents and visitors. We are also pleased to note how functional the first junction already completed and opened to traffic is. Everything is progressing according to schedule,” emphasized Deputy Regional Governor Nikos Skoulas.
