Unemployment rate falls to 7.9% in May 2025

The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate for May 2025 stood at 7.9%, compared to a revised upward figure of 10.5% in May 2024, and 8.3% in April 2025.

According to the latest data from ELSTAT, the number of employed individuals reached 4,346,499, representing an increase of 86,787 persons (+2.0%) compared to May 2024, and a rise of 30,268 persons (+0.7%) compared to April 2025.

The unemployed population stood at 370,369, marking a significant decrease of 128,709 individuals (-25.8%) relative to May 2024, and a further reduction of 19,260 individuals (-4.9%) compared to April 2025.

The number of persons under 75 years of age outside the labor force—that is, those neither employed nor actively seeking employment—totaled 3,036,385. This figure reflects a modest increase of 14,438 persons (+0.5%) compared to May 2024, alongside a slight decrease of 13,363 persons (-0.4%) relative to April 2025.
