The Regional Unit of Thessaloniki has initiated the tendering procedures for the road network upgrade project extending from the intersection near “Makedonia” Airport to the entrance of Peraia. This development follows the approval granted during the most recent session of the Metropolitan Committee of the Thessaloniki Metropolitan Unit, which gave the green light for the project to move forward.

A major infrastructure upgrade project, with a total budget of €4.95 million, is set to significantly improve the functionality and safety of a key roadway connecting Thessaloniki to its eastern districts and the coastal settlement of Peraia. This heavily trafficked corridor has long faced challenges, including surface damage, erosion, and traffic hazards at multiple points.

The planned works include comprehensive technical interventions to address subsidence and road surface deterioration, asphalt resurfacing, new road markings, replacement of traffic signs, and the installation of new safety guardrails. The project also provides for extensive roadside vegetation clearance to enhance visibility and safety.

Two existing metal pedestrian overpasses—located near the Thermi Vocational Training Institute (IEK) and just before the entrance to Peraia—will undergo maintenance and structural improvements.

To mitigate recurring flooding, especially during extreme weather events, the project includes the construction of drainage infrastructure, such as manholes and stormwater pipelines. These will be installed at key locations prone to water accumulation, including the Plagiari junction, the area near the Alexakis nursery, and the broader Thermi IEK zone.

According to Deputy Regional Governor Kostas Gioutikas, the intervention addresses one of the most congested and critical roads in eastern Thessaloniki.

“This is a major upgrade for a road with constant traffic pressure and numerous safety risks. Our goal is to ensure a high level of road safety, smooth and comfortable driving conditions, safe pedestrian mobility, and effective flood protection for both the road and the surrounding communities,” he stated.
