A great number of international connections and infrastructure projects that further contribute to the emergence of Greece as an energy regional center are included in the list of so-called "Projects of Common Interest" (PCIs), put up for consultation by the European Commission last Thursday.

The inclusion of a project in the list of Projects of Common Interest (PCIs) implies a faster licensing process, easier financing, etc.

 

The list includes cross-border projects of high importance for interconnecting the energy markets of Member States and third countries, improving security of supply and meeting the EU's climate targets. , etc.

The list of PCIs is reviewed every two years and the next list, which will emerge from the current consultation, is expected to be finalized by the end of the year.

According to the list put up for consultation, the projects of Greek interest that are considered for the list of PCIs are the following:

The electricity sector includes transmission and energy storage infrastructure.

Specifically, it includes:

- The electricity interconnection of Greece - Bulgaria (IPTO) which is under construction.

-The Eurasian Interconnector, which is planned to connect Israel and Cyprus with mainland Greece, via Crete.

-The LEG1 project that is planned to connect Egypt and Libya with Crete.

- Greece - Africa Power Interconnector (GAP, Cycladic Meltemia).

-The Southern Aegean Interconnector (Cycladic Meltemia, Eunice Energy Group) that connects Attica with the Dodecanese and Crete and then, through GAP, with Egypt. The project is related to the "Aegean" project of the EEG group, amounting to 1.5 billion euros, which is in the final stage of licensing and includes the installation of 138 wind turbines on 23 Aegean islands.

- GREGY Interconnector of ELICA (interconnection Greece - Egypt).

-The Pumping System in Amfilochia of TERNA Energy. The project of installation of energy storage batteries in Ptolemaida of the Eunice Energy Group.

 
In the field of natural gas, the projects of Greek interest are, respectively:

-The Greek-Bulgarian pipeline that is under construction.

-The floating liquefied natural gas unit in Alexandroupolis.

-The underground gas storage in Kavala (the tender is in progress).

-The upgrade of the TAP pipeline.

-The East Med pipeline that is designed to transport natural gas from the fields of the Eastern Mediterranean to Europe, through Greece.

- The submarine pipeline of Greece - Italy, "Poseidon".

- A series of gauges, regulators and compression stations.
