During September 2021 the airport’s passenger traffic continued to be substantially affected by the COVID-19 pandemic crisis and its impact on air travel, with the airport’s passenger traffic being below the respective September 2019 levels by 34.1%.

The specific level of decline -although signifying overall the progressive recovery observed since June- it however provides an indication of a gradual slowdown of the improvement observed during the peak summer period of July and August.

According to the statistics released by the Athens International Airport, in the domestic market, traffic was below the respective 2019 levels by 24.2%, while in the international sector, passenger demand presented a 38.4% decline vs the corresponding 2019 traffic.

Overall, during the period January through September 2021, the airport’s passenger traffic totalled 8.4 million approximately, exceeding the respective 2020 levels by 22.5%, but lagging behind compared to 2019 by 57.9%, as a result of the sharp traffic drop since March 2020 due to the impact of the pandemic.

Analytically, domestic passengers exceeded the 2020 levels by 27.1% and international passengers by 19.8%, while both were below the same period 2019 by 46.9% and 62.8%, respectively.
