"Green light" from the EU for the northern part of E65

The infrastructure project of the northern part of the E65 motorway has been approved as compatible with EU law by the European Commission's DG COMP (Directorate-General for Competition)

The project that had been suspended since 2011.

 

The northern part, with a budget of 442 million euros and a total length of 70.5 km, will connect the city of Trikala with the Egnatia Odos in Grevena, and will include the complete construction of the main highway, service roads and other road connections.

The project had been suspended since 2011 as it was not included in the projects that were restarted in 2013, when only the central section of Xiniada - Trikala, 77.5 km long, which has been delivered and is fully operational, proceeded.

The construction of the Southern Section of E65 (from A.TH.E. to Xyniada) is in full swing. In particular, according to data from August 2020, the total progress of the construction of the project reaches 54.39% while proceeding to a separate analysis, the tunnels show a progress of 60.07%, the bridges and other technical infrastructures are 65.53% complete, the asphalt is at 40.01% and earthworks are at 54.11%.

The construction of the northern part will complete the E65 highway, with a total length of 181 km, connecting two main Greek axes, namely, the Egnatia Odos with the Peripheral Unit of Thessaloniki, allowing the movement from Athens to Western Macedonia and the corresponding connections with Italy (via the Port of Igoumenitsa in the Adriatic), the Western Balkans and, through those, Central and Northern Europe.
