A contract has recently been signed for the renovation of the former "Pavlos Melas" camp in Western Thessaloniki and its "transformation" into a Metropolitan Park.

The works in the project, with funding of €20 million from the Region of Central Macedonia, will begin in October and are expected to be completed by the end of 2023.

The contract was signed by the governor of Central Macedonia, Apostolos Tzitzikostas and the mayor of Pavlos Mela, Dimitris Demourtzidis, with the contractor consortium Dynamiki Ergon SA. - Technical Development of ATEVE, in the presence of the Metropolitan of Naples and Stavroupolis Barnabas, vice-governors, the mayor of Ampelokipi - Menemeni and municipal councilors.

The refurbishment plan calls for the creation of the Metropolitan Park in Thessaloniki, in the area where the former "Pavlou Mela" camp is located today:

  • 90% of the area of 350 acres will be covered with greenery,
  • the building ratio will not exceed 7%, while
  • the buildings' height won't exceed that of the existing properties in the area
