The project is budgeted at €861,566.13 plus VAT and will be partly financed by the Green Fund and comprises the renovation with bioclimatic design of Polytechnic Heroes Square and the contributing sidewalks of Heroes Polytechnic and Aphrodite.
The Square and the sidewalks have been formed 30 years ago and now show obvious damage and destruction which reduce their functionality as a commercial and social center of the Haidari Forest district. Their restoration and aesthetic and functional upgrade will contribute to the improvement of the quality of life of the inhabitants and to the stimulation of the local economic life.
The project will address the problems of damage and slipperiness in the paving of the central square of the Forest and the sidewalks that lead to it.
The use of bioclimatic materials in paving, planting and the installation of shades will deal with the phenomenon of the heat island, ie the excessively high temperatures that develop in urban areas when there is a heat wave. Cold materials with better characteristics will be used to improve the microclimate and high reflectivity of sunlight. The floor materials will be water permeable, thus contributing to the ecological management of rainwater.
The Municipal Lighting will be replaced with the use of LED luminaires.
Particular attention has been paid to the increase of greenery on the sidewalks and the square, to the creation of additional greenery and recreation areas on the islets. The green zones will be enriched with various species of shrubs and plants, while trees suitable for "rich" shade will be planted and an automatic watering network will be installed.
There will also be a functional and aesthetic upgrade of the infrastructure (living rooms, pergolas) that serve the visitors of the square, with parallel use of solar energy for charging mobile phones, electric bicycles, etc.
The project ensures easy access from the streets and the square to everyone and especially to people with disabilities.
