The Deputy Minister of Sports, Giannis Vroutsis, stated: "Another significant sports project in Thessaloniki, which is making a strong comeback to the country's sports map after years, is being realized! An iconic sports facility, the Poseidoniou Nautical Sports Center, is being fully upgraded for the first time with energy efficiency measures! True to our commitments to make decisive interventions in sports facilities across Greece, we are delivering them modern, safe, and sustainable for all the country’s residents. With vision, planning, and methodical work, we are joining forces and working daily toward the comprehensive upgrade of sports infrastructure. A big thank you to the Region of Central Macedonia for the excellent collaboration."
The energy efficiency upgrades at the Poseidoniou Nautical Sports Center include:
- Installation of a Tri-Generation system for electricity, heating, and cooling,
- Installation of Isothermal Covers for the swimming pools,
- Replacement of the existing chiller with a new, more energy-efficient model,
- Replacement of conventional lights and/or bulbs with LED technology,
- Procurement and installation of an energy management system (BEMS),
- Replacement of existing circulators and heating/cooling pumps with new inverter-driven ones and the installation of thermostatic switches.
The project is expected to be completed within one year from the signing of the contract with the contractor, following the completion of the tender process. It is part of the "Central Macedonia 2021-2027 - Supporting Green and Sustainable Development" program, co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF).
It is important to note that the energy upgrade of the Poseidoniou Nautical Sports Center in Thessaloniki is part of a larger program of projects with a total budget of €13,259,763.82. These projects include the modernization and upgrade of the Olympic Velodrome at OAKA (€2,621,173.56), the sports facilities at Mikra of the EAK Thessaloniki (€7,845,610.43), and the indoor swimming pool at the Panepirotic National Sports Center in Ioannina (PEAKI) (€2,792,979.83), which were initiated through close collaboration between the Ministry of Sports, TAIPED, and the Regions of Central Macedonia and Epirus.
