The process for the demolition of the building below the Acropolis began in 2023, when the company "Ble Kedros" informed the relevant department about its desire for the Environmental and Spatial Planning Department to undertake the necessary demolition studies due to the complexity of the project.
Funding for the Study
The Decentralized Administration has reminded that a program agreement has been signed with the Technical Chamber of Greece (TEE) to prepare for the bidding process to draft the demolition study for the illegal parts of the building beneath the Acropolis. A specialized working group has been established for this purpose.
On October 10, 2024, a request was submitted to the Financial Directorate of the Decentralized Administration to initiate the required actions for the allocation of €349,999.92 for both 2025 and 2026 to cover the cost of the demolition study contract.
However, while the drafting of the bidding documents for the partial demolition contract was nearing completion, it was discovered that the necessary credits for 2025, amounting to €349,999.92, were not allocated in the budget of the Decentralized Administration of Attica by the General Accounting Office of the State for that specific year.
Immediate Actions
The Secretary of the Decentralized Administration of Attica acted swiftly and informed the Minister and Deputy Minister of Finance on November 25, 2024, about this development. In response, the Minister of National Economy and Finance issued a relevant decision on January 27, 2025, to cover the required amount from the State Budget reserve.
The announcement clarifies that the preparation of the demolition study is an essential prerequisite for the actual demolition work. This study will assess the structural and seismic stability of the remaining building, suggest the appropriate demolition methods for the illegal floors, and determine whether strengthening the remaining structure is necessary. Only after this will it be possible to plan the demolition work, including measures such as traffic regulations, scaffolding, safety measures, and the disposal of demolition materials in an authorized location.
