The Ministry of Agricultural Development and Food is proceeding with the retendering of the project "Construction of the Nestorian Dam and accompanying works of Kastoria", which has been frozen since 2015.

Among other things, as the Ministry of Agricultural Development and Food noted in an announcement, that the project will not be excluded from the Rural Development Program 2014-2022 and Community Resources will not be lost. It will be transferred as an assumed obligation to the new Program, Common Agricultural Policy 2023-2027 adding that "this solution is the now safe to untangle the project from the existing legal entanglements and ensure its completion, so that there are no further delays".

The 75 m high dam on the Aliakmonas River, in Nestorio, Kastoria, will create an artificial lake with an area of 823 hectares. The net maximum height of the lake at the location of the dam is 58.5 m and the average depth of the lake is about 30 m, so the average height of the gorge exceeds 80 m.

The surface that will be flooded is 823 acres and a percentage of about 60% is the river bed. The auxiliary roads that will be built and the loan rooms for receiving materials after the end of the works will be restored.

The average annual discharge of the river at the location of the dam is approximately 144.4 million cubic meters and the useful volume of the dam is 15.4 million cubic meters. The water of the dam will be renewed, due to the large flows, 9.5 times a year and thus the fluctuation of the lake level will not exceed 10 meters on an annual basis with the water quality due to the renewal remaining excellent.

The irrigation will concern 75,000 acres and will allow for the restructuring of crops with new dynamics with an emphasis on leguminous and horticultural crops.
