Against the backdrop of ongoing seismic activity in the region, the Minister emphasized that there is a possibility of a larger earthquake occurring, making continuous vigilance and timely preparation essential. "A major earthquake could cause extensive damage or even trigger a tsunami. The residents of Santorini and the surrounding islands must be aware that, in the event of a significant earthquake, they should immediately move away from coastal and low-lying areas and head towards higher, safer ground," he stressed.
The project will be implemented immediately by the Armed Forces, as part of a tripartite agreement with Civil Protection and the contractor.
Regarding civil protection infrastructure and port projects, the Minister stated: "I am not satisfied with how significant infrastructure projects have been managed since the post-dictatorship era. Flood protection works, environmental studies, port projects, and the management of illegal landfills are issues that require urgent and substantive solutions."
Mr. Kikilias also pointed out that a full operational force has been deployed in the area, which includes the security forces and the Armed Forces, with nearby ships on standby for immediate intervention, along with the Emergency Medical Services (EKAB), medical personnel, and the Public Power Corporation (DEDDIE), which has emergency materials ready for rapid restoration of the electricity grid. Additionally, mobile phone companies are equipped with 4x4 communication vehicles to ensure the delivery of 112 emergency alerts, even in the event of telecommunications infrastructure collapse.
