Global Gateway supports investments by European companies in non-EU countries across sectors such as energy, transportation, health, and education, with priority given in 2025 to Africa and the Western Balkans. These flagship projects include European investments that enhance competitiveness, strengthen supply chains, and contribute to the green transition of the global economy. METLEN's investment is among the 46 projects listed for 2025, which combine public and private investments in third countries to advance the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The "Integrated Bauxite and Aluminum Project in Ghana" aligns with the European Union's broader strategy to enhance access to critical raw materials and secure strategic autonomy. It is worth noting that international markets are currently experiencing significant pressure in the bauxite and alumina sectors, with demand surpassing supply.
METLEN's project in Ghana focuses on the exploitation of the rich bauxite deposits in the Ninayhin – Mpasaaso area, where geological reserves are estimated at approximately 300 million tons.
Currently, METLEN is conducting scoping studies for the project's development. According to the timeline, these studies will be completed by 2025, when decisions on the next steps for development will be made.
As the only fully vertically integrated company producing bauxite, alumina, and primary aluminum within the European Union, METLEN remains committed to its strategy of securing diverse global supply sources.
Additionally, as the EU’s largest bauxite producer, METLEN contributes to reducing the EU’s dependence on external suppliers, supports the local aluminum industry, and strengthens the resilience of supply chains and the overall competitiveness of the EU.
