According to statistics, in 2024, 39 new wind turbines with a total installed capacity of 125.5 MW were connected to the grid, corresponding to investments totaling €150 million. This marks a 2.4% increase compared to the end of 2023.
While the growth rate has slowed, it remains positive. According to the Association, this slowdown is attributed to a combination of two factors:
The previous year (2023) was the second best year for wind energy in Greece, as many new wind farms were completed and connected to the grid. Similarly, the following year (2025) is expected to be much more positive, as many new wind investments under construction or contracted are expected to be completed in the coming months. Therefore, the slowdown in 2024 may also be attributed to coincidental scheduling factors of the investments.
A significant factor remains the delays caused by bureaucratic obstacles and the frequent inability of services to properly implement the provisions and deadlines of licensing legislation. As a result, wind farms face a licensing regime that is clearly more challenging than that of other technologies.
According to the Hellenic Wind Energy Association (ELETAEN), by the end of 2024, over 1.1 GW of new wind farms were under construction or had been contracted, the vast majority of which are expected to be connected to the grid within the next 18 months. Additionally, about 300 MW from projects selected in tenders, with performance guarantees submitted, but not falling under the aforementioned categories, should be added. As a result, total wind capacity is expected to exceed 6.5 GW within the next two years.
At the regional level, Sterea Ellada remains the leader in wind installations, hosting 2,346 MW (44%), followed by Peloponnese with 667 MW (12%), and Eastern Macedonia and Thrace, where 535 MW (10%) are located.
Regarding business groups, the Top-5 are:
- TERNA Energy with 1,034 MW (19.3%)
- MORE with 766 MW (14.3%)
- Iberdrola Rokas with 409 MW (7.6%)
- Principia with 368 MW (6.8%)
- DEI Renewables with 276 MW (5.2%)
Other companies include Total Energies, EDF, METLEN, Jasper Energy, Cubico, HELENiQ Energy, among others.
Regarding the wind turbine manufacturers, Vestas has supplied 44.7% of the total installed wind capacity in Greece. Following are Enercon with 25.8%, Siemens Gamesa with 16.8%, Nordex with 7.3%, and GE Renewable Energy with 3.8%. Smaller shares are held by EWT, Goldwind, and Leitwind.
The wind energy hourly participation in the system in 2024 is as follows:
- The highest hourly penetration of wind power was 90.3%, observed on Monday, 08.04.2024 (03:00 - 04:00).
- For a total of 2,575 hours in the year, wind power penetration was over 30% of energy demand.
- For a total of 5,253 hours, the combined penetration of wind and solar was over 30%, and for 2,618 hours, it was over 60%.
- The total hourly penetration of wind and solar exceeded 100% of demand for 306 hours in 2024.
