The project involves the modification of Gatwick Airport to support dual runways through the regular use of the existing northern runway, aiming to accommodate up to 80 million passengers annually.
The development will include runway modifications, terminal expansions, auxiliary facilities, highways, and waterways, as well as temporary construction works and other related developments. It should be noted that the proposed “small runway” has received approval from the relevant ministry; however, it still requires planning permission, and various objections are delaying decisions on a project that began its “race” in July 2023.
Indeed, Gatwick could be considered to be on a downward trajectory compared to its rival, Heathrow Airport, whose third runway is unlikely to become operational until 2035—six years after the current government implies Gatwick’s runway will be functional.
