LAMDA Development CEO Odysseas Athanasiou reiterated his projection that by 2027, the Hellinikon project will be fully operational and vibrant. His remarks were made during the 29th Annual Government Roundtable – Walking Steadily Across a Tightrope of Uncertainty, hosted by The Economist, in a discussion with Daniel Franklin, Executive and Senior Editor at The Economist.

When asked about the challenges the project has faced, Mr. Odysseas Athanasiou, CEO of LAMDA Development, reflected on the long journey that began in 2014, describing it as “the perfect storm.” He outlined the significant obstacles encountered along the way — from the initial bureaucratic hurdles and the aftermath of a decade-long economic crisis, to the global pandemic, geopolitical instability, and ongoing conflicts. “Despite it all, we succeeded,” he stated emphatically.

In response to a question regarding the company’s position in the European real estate market, Mr. Athanasiou emphasized that LAMDA Development is today one of the very few companies in Europe with the expertise and capacity to deliver developments of such scale and complexity. This, he noted, lays the groundwork for the company to undertake similarly ambitious projects across the continent in the future.

The conversation also addressed the anticipated impact of the project on tourism. Based on relevant studies, the Hellinikon development is expected to attract at least one million additional visitors per year, providing a substantial boost to the national economy and significantly enhancing the global profile of Athens.

However, the project's vision extends far beyond economic growth and residential development. Mr. Athanasiou placed particular emphasis on its broader societal value — highlighting the project's commitment to quality of life, sustainability, and inclusivity. “More green, less concrete, and open public spaces accessible to all,” he stated. Key components such as the Metropolitan Park, world-class sports facilities, and over 45 kilometers of pedestrian and cycling paths will collectively contribute to a new lifestyle paradigm — not only for Athens but for the wider Attica region.

Mr. Athanasiou concluded with the same clear message with which he began: “The Hellinikon project is moving forward. In two years, it will no longer be just a plan — it will be a living, evolving reality.”
