Good City Studio and Hexagon Studio Architects have transformed a former power plant in Philadelphia, USA, into a state-of-the-art sports center that includes indoor pickleball courts, soccer fields, and squash courts.

More specifically, Ballers is located within a section of the recently renovated Delaware power station in Fishtown, Philadelphia. This area was transformed into a mixed-use complex called The Battery, which includes both residential and commercial spaces.

The power station was originally built in the early 1900s and remained operational until 2005. Most of the conversion work was carried out by the architectural studio Strada.

Ballers occupies the former turbine hall of the power plant, a large horizontal volume situated between the original entrance and the river-facing rear side—now filled with apartments and a rooftop pool. The sports courts are spread across the ground floor and a mezzanine level, while a partially enclosed restaurant sits at the center. Smaller social areas and courts line the perimeter, creating a vibrant community hub.

Amanda Potter, founder of Good City Studio and creative lead for Ballers, who collaborated with the local firm Hexagon Studio Architects on the project, told Dezeen that the building’s scale and its 23-meter-high column-free hall, illuminated by natural skylight, “made the space incredibly well-suited for sports facilities.”
