The project is been progressing in fast pace. The Central Council of Architecture approved it this summer, while at the same time the Region of Attica gave the "green light" granting the approval of the environmental standards of the project "Sports facilities of the Metropolitan Green and Recreation Park of the Metropolitan Pole Ellinikon - Agios Kosmas".
The project refers to an area of approximately 300 thousand square meters at the NW end of the Park (on the border with Alimos) which will function as a pole of supra-local importance.
Since August, the Central Council of Architecture under the chairmanship of Efthimis Bakoyannis has given the green light for the project, opening wide the door to implementation. At the end of the Spring, there was a positive opinion from the Region of Attica, on July 29, the environmental conditions of the project "Sports facilities of the Metropolitan Park of Green and Recreation of the Metropolitan Pole Ellinikon - Agios Kosmas" were approved and now the light was also given by the Central Council of Architecture of Ministry of Environment and Energy.
The new Ellinikon sports center comes to cover all the current needs of the southern suburbs of the city, being at the same time an integral part of the Metropolitan Park in Ellinikon.
The new Ellinikon sports center in further detail will comprise
-Swimming Center with 3 swimming pools namely a covered 53m x 25m – 2m depth, an outdoor 50m x 25m – 2m depth pool and also an outdoor 50m x 25m – 3m depth pool with bleachers with a capacity of 1000 people.
-Indoor instrumental and rhythmic gymnastics training, Instrumental Academy and "multiple" training.
-Athletics facilities (open track, open throwing field, indoor track training and track building). The nature of the facility is training, but the possibility of holding matches is foreseen.
-Professional Football facilities with locker room and football administration building as well as three football pitches.
-Soccer Academy with a Soccer Field (will have Hockey field markings) with synthetic turf, 2 7 x 7 pitches also with synthetic turf, as well as a Central Administration and Support Operations Building.
-Basketball Academy that includes an indoor arena for games and an additional 6 indoor training rooms.
-Academy of Tennis (Tennis) which will initially include 20 Tennis Courts to be served by a central building for administration and support functions. After the completion of the proposed route of the tram line, it is planned to add 8 more Tennis Courts, as well as an additional building that will accommodate catering and recreational uses.
-Four outdoor beach volleyball courts and an administration building - auxiliary spaces as well as three outdoor basketball courts and 1 outdoor tennis court in the area where the Olympic facilities for Canoeing - Kayaking once stood.
The new sports facilities in Ellinikon also include athletes' accommodation hostels with 272 beds (121 keys).
The building will be developed in 2 superstructure levels and 2 basement levels with a total coverage of 6,252 sq.m., less than permitted. The accommodation units are divided into 2 categories, double rooms of 25 sq.m., and four-bed rooms of 50 sq.m. and of 70 sq.m.
