The project, with a budget of €26 million, is funded by the Cohesion Fund through the Operational Programme "Transport Infrastructure, Environment, and Sustainable Development" and is expected to be completed by December 2026.
The stream management project includes significant interventions that will enhance the resilience of the wider area against the impacts of climate change.
The management of the Korbi stream aims to:
- Ensure the uninterrupted flow of water to prevent flooding in the residential areas of Vari and Koropi.
- Strengthen Eastern Attica against the increasingly intense rainfall observed due to climate change.
- Protect the lives and property of the residents.
The project includes the construction of technical works to manage the stream, ensuring appropriate hydraulic capacity and the area's resilience to extreme weather conditions. This stream has been a source of concern for the residents of Vari, Varkiza, and Koropi for decades, as it has often caused devastating floods.
In particular, heavy rainfalls and the lack of adequate infrastructure have led to significant damage to homes, roads, and agricultural land.
