On average, the Tunnel Boring Machines (TBM) used to dig tunnels for Line 4, also known as the "orange" line, can pass up to 20 meters per day. These machines line the tunnel with a seven-piece ring that is 1.5 meters wide.

The AVAX company announced the construction of Line 4 – "Alsos Veikou-Goudi" of the Athens Metro at the "Katehaki" construction site during a press presentation.

The TBM has already advanced approximately 700 meters from the starting point at Katehaki well towards the GOUDI station. However, there is no ready trench at the station as only five out of the total fifteen preliminary works have been completed, and the studies have been handed over to the construction consortium.

According to AVAX, ERETVO has undertaken the preliminary works and has so far handed over the Kolonaki and Dikasteria, Akadimia, Alsos Veikou, and Galatsi stations to the consortium. Due to this delay, it is challenging to complete the project within the contractual time, i.e. the summer of 2029.

Preparation for the other TBM is in its final stage, and within the next few days, the opening from Alsos Veikou to Galatsi is expected to start. The two TBN machines "Athina" and "Niki" will meet at Evangelismos station in about a year from today. In the first phase, approximately 13 km of the section will be constructed from Alsos Veikou in Galatsi to Goudi, within the Municipalities of Athens, Galatsi, Kaisariani, and Zografou.

The section includes fifteen new stations, with their ventilation shafts: Alsos Veikou, Galatsi, Elikonos, Kypseli, Courts, Alexandras, Exarchia, Akadimia, Kolonaki, Evangelismos, Kaisariani, University, Zografou, Ilisia, and Goudi. A new Operation Control Center (OCC) will also be built for Line 4, with the prospect of integrating the operation control of Lines 1, 2, 3, as well as future automatic new lines and the Tram. Additionally, a new building for maintenance and repairs of the new trains, which will be placed in available space at the Sepolia depot, will be constructed. Finally, two line stations will be built before Alsos Veikou station (under Veikou Avenue) and after Goudi station (under Katehaki Avenue) for the deposition of new trains, their cleaning and maintenance.

There will be next,

Section B: Goudi-Marousi (9.6 km long and 8 stations)

Section C: Evangelismos-Ano Ilioupoli (4.1 km long and 3 stations)

Section D: Alsos Veikou-Petroupoli (7.5 km long and 6 stations)

Section E: Marousi-Ethniki Odos (4.4 km long and 3 stations)

The contractor for the section from Alsos Veikou-Goudi with a budget of €1,510,000,000 is the joint venture of the companies AVAX-GHELLA-ALSTOM.
