Skaramangas Shipyards sign contract to upgrade MEKO Frigates

  • RE+D Magazine

Skaramangas Shipyards are entering the upgrade programme for the Hellenic Navy’s MEKO-type frigates, following the signing of a contract with the Ministry of National Defence for the execution of specialised shipbuilding and electromechanical works.

The project, which is of high technical complexity, involves critical interventions for the installation and secure integration of new electronic systems, with the aim of enhancing the operational capability of the Fleet.

The Hellenic Navy’s MEKO-type frigates were originally constructed at the facilities of the Skaramangas Shipyards.

The contract concerns the implementation of a complex, technically demanding project, which includes the removal of existing electronic equipment, the configuration of new installation points for sensors, the installation of new cabling for system interconnection with control consoles, as well as the full upgrade and reconfiguration of the Combat Information Centre (CIC) and the vessels’ specialised command spaces.

All works will be carried out in accordance with the most stringent military standards and applicable technical specifications, ensuring the safe integration of the new electronic systems and their full operational deployment.

Particular emphasis is placed on the detailed coordination of the shipyard works with the delivery schedule of the electronic systems. Through this integrated planning approach, the project aims to significantly reduce the time the frigates remain at the shipyard facilities, while maintaining high levels of availability for the operational units of the Hellenic Navy.
