The project is considered of strategic importance for Western Attica and the wider Athens metropolitan area, as it is expected to provide a significant and lasting improvement to traffic conditions.
“The project addresses one of Attica’s most critical traffic problems, as the Skaramangas area serves approximately 100,000 vehicles every day, including nearly 20,000 heavy trucks, with significant impacts on traffic flows, the logistics chain and economic activity. According to the results of the traffic microsimulation model, average speeds in the area are expected to increase from 28 km/h to 47 km/h, while the estimated economic benefit for road users amounts to approximately €10 million annually,” Infrastructure and Transport Minister Christos Dimas recently stated before the Parliament’s Committee on Production and Trade, during discussions on the approval of the project contract.
He also highlighted that the project represents a development of high social and economic value, with no toll charges, which will reduce travel times and vehicle operating costs.
The total contractual value of the project amounts to €40.8 million (including VAT), while the construction period has been set at 36 months from the signing of the contract.
The scope of works includes the completion of the Western Aigaleo Peripheral Road (DPLA), the construction of the Skaramangas Grade-Separated Interchange connecting the DPLA with the Athens–Corinth National Road, the upgrade of the existing Schisto Interchange, the construction of the Shipyards Interchange, the redesign of the Athens–Corinth National Road and Schistou Avenue between the above interchanges, as well as the construction of the required stormwater drainage network for the area.
More specifically, the main works include:
Completion of the Western Aigaleo Peripheral Road (DPLA): The final 1.515-kilometre section of the road will be completed up to the Athens–Corinth National Road. Earthworks have already been carried out in this section, but the project remains unfinished.
Construction of the Skaramangas Grade-Separated Interchange: The new interchange will connect the Western Aigaleo Peripheral Road with the Athens–Corinth National Road.
Upgrade of the existing Schisto Interchange: The existing two-lane bridge will be utilised to serve traffic from Schisto towards Corinth with two traffic lanes, while a second overpass bridge will be constructed above the Athens–Corinth National Road to serve traffic travelling from Athens towards Schisto. As part of these works, the Athens–Corinth National Road between the Skaramangas and Schisto interchanges will also be upgraded through lane expansion and reconfiguration.
Construction of the Shipyards Grade-Separated Interchange: The new interchange on Schistou Avenue will replace the existing signalised at-grade junction at the intersection of Schistou Avenue and Palaska Street. The project will also include the completion of the necessary traffic arrangements throughout the surrounding road network.
As part of the construction of the new interchange and the upgrade of the Schisto Interchange, Schistou Avenue between the two junctions will also be redesigned.
In addition, the project includes three optional extensions concerning:
the construction of additional branches at the Schisto and Shipyards interchanges;
the demolition and reconstruction of the existing bridge at the Schisto Interchange; and
the development of the Aspropyrgos Grade-Separated Interchange, using the underpass of the Western Aigaleo Peripheral Road to connect it with the Athens–Corinth National Road.
