As highlighted in the announcement, HEDNO has signed the construction contract with Paralos Emporiki S.A., marking a critical step toward the modernization and environmental upgrade of the country’s port infrastructure.
The project предусматри, within an 18-month timeframe, the installation of two OPS units with a capacity of 3 MVA each and one unit of 0.5 MVA. The new infrastructure will enable passenger/roll-on–roll-off (Ro-Pax) vessels to shut down their auxiliary engines while berthed and draw electricity directly from the power distribution network.
Upon completion, the system is expected to significantly reduce atmospheric pollutant emissions and noise levels from docked vessels, thereby improving the quality of life for residents of Igoumenitsa and contributing to the broader environmental enhancement of the surrounding area.
The project is co-financed at a rate of 85% by the European Union’s Connecting Europe Facility programme (Grant No. 101122898 – 22-EL-TC-ALFION-INFRA) and is being implemented in cooperation with the Igoumenitsa Port Authority, the National Technical University of Athens, and the companies Protasis, WMG and Hydrus.
This initiative forms part of the broader European strategic framework for climate neutrality, as outlined in the European Green Deal and the Fit for 55 legislative package, which aim to substantially reduce greenhouse gas emissions and accelerate the decarbonisation of the transport sector.
HEDNO underscores that it continues to act as a catalyst for the green transition and innovation within Greece’s electricity distribution network, while ensuring transparent and non-discriminatory access for all network users.
