  • RE+D Magazine

The cost of construction materials for new residential buildings continued to rise in May 2026, according to data from ELSTAT, confirming the ongoing inflationary pressures in the construction sector.

More specifically, the General Price Index of Construction Materials for New Residential Buildings, with base year 2021=100.0, recorded an increase of 4.3% in May 2026 compared with the same month of 2025. This increase is higher than that recorded one year earlier, as in May 2025 the index had risen by 3.1% compared with May 2024.

On a monthly basis, the index increased by 0.5% in May compared with April 2026, compared with a rise of 0.3% recorded in the corresponding monthly comparison in 2025.

At the same time, the average index for the twelve-month period June 2025 – May 2026 increased by 2.7% compared with the corresponding twelve-month period June 2024 – May 2025. However, the rate of increase shows signs of deceleration, as during the previous corresponding period an increase of 4.7% had been recorded.

The data indicate that, despite a degree of annual moderation, the cost of construction materials continues to rise, affecting both the cost of new residential construction and investment activity in the real estate and construction sectors.
