GE Vernova has introduced a new medium-voltage uninterruptible power supply (UPS) system for the data center market, seeking to address the growing energy requirements driven by the rapid development of artificial intelligence (AI).
The new system, known as the MV-UPS, differs from conventional UPS systems, which are typically installed at the low-voltage level, downstream of the electrical voltage transformation stage. According to the company, the MV-UPS operates directly on a facility’s medium-voltage network, positioned between the electrical power supply and the critical loads.
A “Buffer” Against Load Fluctuations
According to GE Vernova, the system creates a form of “stability block” between the facility and its power source. This enables it to protect a larger portion of a data center’s electrical infrastructure while, at the same time, limiting the transmission of sudden changes in electricity demand to the grid or generating assets.
The MV-UPS combines power conversion technology, control systems, and integrated energy storage to maintain stable voltage and frequency for critical loads.
At the same time, it acts as a “buffer” against sudden fluctuations in power consumption caused by changes in facility loads.
AI Energy Demand at the Forefront
The technology is specifically targeting the AI data center market, where AI-related workloads can generate significant and rapid fluctuations in electricity demand.
GE Vernova estimates that the MV-UPS can smooth these fluctuations while also helping to simplify the electrical infrastructure downstream of the medium-voltage point of connection.
“Reliable and uninterrupted power is foundational to every energy-intensive industry, and AI data centers are raising this requirement to a new level of scale and complexity,” said Philippe Piron, CEO of GE Vernova’s Electrification business.
He noted that the company is leveraging existing power conversion and energy storage technologies in a new way, with the aim of combining reliability with cost and space efficiency.
First Deliveries Expected in 2027
GE Vernova plans to begin deliveries of its MV-UPS systems in mid-2027, while the first project to deploy the system is expected to become operational toward the end of the same year.
The new product expands GE Vernova’s data center portfolio, which already includes gas turbines, substations, transformers, switchgear, and energy management systems.
The company has already entered into agreements with major data center operators to supply electrical power equipment. These include an agreement with Amazon Web Services (AWS) to provide electrical power equipment for four data centers.
The development highlights the data center market’s shift away from the simple question of electricity availability toward the broader challenge of grid stability, energy storage, and load management, as the rapid expansion of AI significantly increases the power and infrastructure requirements of these facilities.
